Creamy, bright and made for sharing: the easiest snack on the table this season.
Introduction
Football Sundays, harvest get-togethers, a few friends around the kitchen island: autumn is the season of snacking. This whipped sardine dip is our answer. Two tins, a little cream cheese and yogurt, plenty of lemon and a dusting of smoked paprika, blended into something silky and savory that disappears faster than you can refill the crackers. It is also a lovely centerpiece for a tinned fish board.
Why Sardines?
Skin & Bone Wild Sardines are wild caught, steamed (never fried) and hand-packed in Portugal in extra virgin olive oil with a pinch of sea salt, nothing else. Each tin has 18g of protein and is rich in omega-3s, and because the sardines are so tender, they whip into a smooth dip in seconds.
Prep: 10 minutes | Cook: 0 minutes | Total: 10 minutes (plus optional chilling)
Ingredients (Serves 6 as a snack)
- 2 tins Skin & Bone Wild Sardines in olive oil (oil reserved)
- 4 oz (115 g) cream cheese, softened
- 1/3 cup plain Greek yogurt
- 1 small clove garlic, finely grated
- Zest of 1 lemon, plus 1 to 2 tbsp juice
- 1 tbsp capers, drained and chopped (optional)
- 2 tbsp chopped chives or parsley, plus more to finish
- 1/2 tsp smoked paprika, plus more to finish
- Salt and freshly cracked black pepper
- To serve: crackers, toasted sourdough, potato chips, carrot and celery sticks, radishes, endive leaves, cornichons

Instructions
-
Whip the Base
In a food processor (or a bowl with a fork), blend the cream cheese, yogurt, garlic, lemon zest and 1 tablespoon of lemon juice until smooth.
-
Add the Sardines
Lift the sardines out of the tins, keeping the oil aside, and add them with 1 tablespoon of their oil. Pulse a few times until creamy but still with a little texture.
-
Season
Stir in the capers, herbs and smoked paprika. Taste, then adjust with more lemon juice, a pinch of salt and plenty of black pepper.
-
Plate It Up
Spread the dip into a shallow bowl and make a swirl with the back of a spoon. Drizzle with a little more oil from the tin and finish with a dusting of paprika and a few herbs.
-
Serve
Surround with crackers, toast and crisp vegetables and let everyone dig in.

Notes
- Make ahead: the dip keeps covered in the fridge for up to 1 day. Let it sit out for 15 minutes and stir before serving.
- Lighter version: swap the cream cheese for more Greek yogurt and blend in a little extra sardine oil for richness.
- Prefer the water tin? Use Skin & Bone Wild Sardines in water, drain well and blend in 1 tablespoon of extra virgin olive oil. That tin has no added salt, so season to taste.
- Turn it into a board: serve with a whole open tin, pickled vegetables, olives and lemon wedges for an easy tinned fish board.
- Leftovers make a great sandwich spread or a topping for a baked potato.
Final Thoughts
The best party food is the kind you can make in ten minutes and still feel proud to set down on the table. This dip is exactly that: simple, bright and full of coastal character. If you like having tins on hand for moments like this, the Tin Club keeps your pantry stocked.
